Senior Leaders
  • Requires consultation with appropriate governance committee(s) prior to selection of search committee
  • Search committee required
  • See Hiring Selected Senior and Other High Level Leader Positions for further details
  • Requires consultation with Vice President of the Office of Human Resources and Director of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action
  • If tenure involved, requires additional approvals (see below)
  • Requires final approval by the President or designee and Board of Regents
Tenure-Track and Tenured Faculty
  • Search committee required
  • National search required
  • Requires EOAA liaison and HR staff consultation before hire
  • Requires unit tenured faculty’s positive recommendation for tenure before offer
  • Requires approval of the Provost and Department Head/senior administrator before offer
  • Foreign Nationals on non-immigrant temporary visas (J-1, H-1B, F-1 OPT, TN) can be placed in tenure-track, but not tenured positions on hire. Refer to Citizenship, Residency and Visa Requirements
Term Faculty
  • Search committee optional
  • Limited search recommended
  • Requires EOAA liaison and HR staff consultation before hire
  • Requires approval from Dean/VP and/or Department Head/Director before hire
Post Docs
  • Search committee optional
  • Requires approval from Dean and/or Department Head before hire
Academic Administrative (93xx and 9631-9640)
  • Search committee optional
  • Scope determined by level and responsibilities of position
  • Requires EOAA liaison and HR staff consultation before hire
Academic Professional (97xx, 9621-9629 U of M Extension)
  • Search committee required
  • Scope determined by level and responsibilities of position
  • Requires EOAA liaison and HR staff consultation before hire
P&A – Probationary / Continuous Appointments
  • Search committee required
  • National search recommended
  • Requires EOAA liaison and HR staff consultation before hire
  • Requires committee’s positive recommendation to continuous appointment before offer
Civil Service / Labor-Represented
  • Limited search (recommended, but dependent on job duties)
  • See appropriate contract or governing rules
 
No-Search Hires
  • Must obtain all approvals/positive recommendations for position (see above)
