FAA Restrictions

Restriction Requirement University Property Impacted Approval
Proximity to Airports May not operate within five (5) nautical miles of an airport having an operational control tower without contacting the control tower for prior authorization. Duluth campus: all areas west of University Drive (see heliport for additional restriction)

Twin Cities campus: Eastcliff

Review of request included as part of FAA Certificate of Waiver or Authorization process.
Proximity to Helipads May not operate within two (2) nautical miles of a heliport without contacting the control tower for prior authorization Duluth campus: all areas, with the exception of land north of St. Marie Street (see airport requirements for additional restriction)

Twin Cities campus: all areas on the east and west bank; Community University Health Care Center (CHUCC)

Rochester campus: all areas

Contact local hospital to request approval.
Proximity to Major Stadiums A no-fly zone exists within three (3) nautical miles of any stadium with a seating capacity of 30,000 or more people when there is a major league baseball games, NFL game, NCAA division one football game, or major motor speedway even occurring. Applies for one hour prior to and one hour after the event. During events at Huntington Bank Stadium (Twin Cities campus), the following University properties are included in the restricted area:
  • Twin Cities campus: all areas on the east bank, west bank, and Saint Paul campuses; Community University Health Care Center (CUHCC); Eastcliff
During events at Target Field or US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, the following University properties are included in the restricted area:
  • Twin Cities campus: all areas on the east bank and west bank campuses; Community University Health Care Center (CUHCC); Urban Research and Outreach Center (UROC)
Not permitted, no approval would be granted.

University Restrictions

This section outlines areas of campus that are impacted by facility restrictions that are broader than those imposed by the FAA.

Restriction Requirement University Property Impacted Approval
Proximity to Stadiums A no-fly zone exists on campus when there is a main bowl event at an outdoor stadium, regardless of event type or attendance. Applies for three hours prior to and three hours after the event. During events at Huntington Bank Stadium (Twin Cities campus), the following University properties are included in the restricted area:
  • Twin Cities campus: all areas on the east bank, west bank, and Saint Paul campuses
During events at Malosky Field (Duluth campus), the following University properties are included in the restricted area:
  • Duluth campus: all areas on the campus
During events at Big Cat Stadium (Morris campus), the following University properties are included in the restricted area:
  • Morris campus: all areas on the campus
Not permitted, no approval would be granted.
