APPENDIX TO POLICY

English Language Proficiency Requirements

Note: System campuses may opt for alternate scoring systems.

Required scores for various levels of TA duties are:

  1. In order to be cleared (without concurrent coursework—see #2) for leading a recitation, discussion, or lab section of a course, students must attain an English Language Proficiency (ELP) rating of "1". These are students who have scored 27 or higher on the speaking portion of the Test of English as a Foreign Language internet Based Test (TOEFL iBT), have received an ELP of “1” on the SETTA (Spoken English Test for Teaching Assistants) or who have received an ELP rating of "1" after successful completion of GRAD 5105: Practicum in University Teaching. Students at this level are not required to take English communication coursework but are welcome to enroll in teaching enrichment workshops sponsored by the Center for Educational Innovation.
  2. Students with an ELP rating of “2” are cleared to hold office hours and grade papers. They are also eligible for leading a recitation, discussion, or lab section, but they MUST enroll in GRAD 5105: Practicum in University Teaching. They are students who have either completed GRAD 5102: Preparation for University Teaching, have scored 23-26 on the speaking portion of the TOEFL iBT, or have received a “2” on the SETTA test.
  3. Students with an ELP rating of "4" are also eligible to hold office hours and grade papers but they MUST enroll in GRAD 5102 Preparation for University Teaching concurrently with their office and grading assignments. They are students who have scored 18-22 on the speaking portion of the TOEFL iBT, or have received a “4” on the SETTA test.
  4. Students with an ELP Rating of "5" are NOT yet eligible for any teaching assistant assignments. They are students who have attained a score of 17 or below on the TOEFL iBT or a “5” on the SETTA test. These students are strongly encouraged to enroll in Foundations of Teaching with CEI.
