Courses must have four-digit numbers following the system in this appendix. The first number designates the course level. The numbering system is as follows:

Course level identification
Course Numbering Course Sequence Description
0xxx- Courses that are remedial and do not carry credit toward any University degree. They may be assessed tuition and fees and count in financial aid calculations in the same way as courses that carry credit.
1xxx- Courses primarily for undergraduate students in their first year of study, considered lower division courses.
2xxx- Courses primarily for undergraduate students in their second year of study, considered lower division courses.
3xxx- Courses primarily for undergraduate students in their third year of study, considered upper division courses.
4xxx- Courses primarily for undergraduate students in their third or fourth year of study, considered upper division courses. Graduate students may enroll in such courses for degree credit within limits set by the Application of Credits for Students Earning Graduate Degrees policy and their program.
5xxx- Courses primarily for graduate students; undergraduate students in their third or fourth year may enroll in such courses.
6xxx- Courses for post-baccalaureate students in professional degree programs. Graduate students pursuing other post-baccalaureate degrees may apply such courses to degree requirements with program approval.
7xxx- Courses for post-baccalaureate students in professional degree programs. Graduate students pursuing other post-baccalaureate degrees may apply such courses to degree requirements with program approval.
8xxx- Courses for graduate students. Students pursuing post-baccalaureate professional degrees (e.g., DDS, JD) may apply such courses to degree requirements with program approval.
9xxx- Courses for graduate students. Students pursuing post-baccalaureate professional degrees (e.g., DDS, JD) may apply such courses to degree requirements with program approval.
