Policy Statement
Students who enroll in a University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) course through College in the High School (CIHS) should be challenged by the experience of college course work, but capable of succeeding. Criteria for eligibility are as follows:
General Requirements:
- The CIHS student must maintain a minimum UMC GPA of 2.0 each term to continue enrollment at UMC. Each term with a GPA below 2.0 will be followed by a suspension of one term.
- 10% of the course size can consist of 10th grade students, and the courses available for the 10th grade CIHS option are limited to approved courses only.
- A Minnesota resident
- Courses being made available to 10th graders along with any prerequisite criteria are established and approved by the academic department offering the course.
- UMC does not admit 9th grade students into the CIHS program.
10th grade student initial first term* admission criteria:
- Achieved a sophomore status in the high school
- Cumulative HS GPA of 3.75 or higher and in the top 10% of a national or state-wide standardized test (e.g. MCA, NWEA, Explore, ACT) to initially enroll
- Complete the CIHS Petition Form and include required documentation.**
10th grade student continuing second term* admission criteria:
- Cumulative HS GPA of 3.75 or higher
- Complete the CIHS Petition Form and include required documentation.**
11th & 12th grade student admission criteria:
- Achieved junior status in the high school
- Cumulative HS GPA of 3.0 or higher to initially enroll
Reason for Policy
Eligibility criteria is intended to facilitate selection of appropriate students by high school teachers, counselors, or administrators—or self-selection by students.

Procedures
Student eligibility criteria is proposed by the UMC CIHS Committee to the Academic Standards & Policy Committee and approved by Faculty Assembly. Decisions on whether or not a student is prepared for the rigor of the University course rests with the Academic Standards and Policy Committee. Appeals are submitted to the Registrar and reviewed by the Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs. Decisions of the Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs is final.
*First term is the initial semester of admittance into the CIHS program, second term is the subsequent semester

- a student-written personal letter
- high school course instructor recommendation with signature for each course
- high school approval
- middle & high school transcripts
