APPENDIX TO POLICY

Appointment Terms

A basic appointment term represents the length of an appointment, in months and the dates. Each of these terms is represented by a code. Standard appointment terms range from 9 to 12 months. A 9 month term may be used to indicate that entire length of time or a portion of that 9 months. An appointment may be set up for an entire term or a portion thereof. Payroll payments are made on alternating Wednesdays for the term of the appointment. In some cases, payroll payments are made over 26 pay periods for appointments shorter than 12 months. Appointment terms grouped by payroll payment schedules are reflected below.

Miscellaneous Codes

S – Summer Session: A summer session appointment term is to be used for employees (new or existing) hired to teach summer session courses

Y – Summer Research: A Summer Research (Y) appointment term is to be used by faculty and academic professional and administrative staff (excluding 95xx professionals-in-training). It is applicable under the following circumstances: (a) a person is hired during the summer term only for the sole or partial purposes of conducting research, (b) a new employee is being hired into an academic year term but is initially starting employment in the summer with the sole or partial purpose of conducting research, and (c) an existing employee serving in an academic year appointment term who is additionally hired for summer term for the sole or partial purpose of conducting research.

Z – Hourly, Summer Term, Lump Sums: An Hourly, Summer Term, Lump Sums (Z) appointment term is to be used for miscellaneous hourly, summer term (non-research, non-summer session) and lump sum appointments.

0 – Not applicable: Currently used most often for Temporary and Casual appointments
