CONSULTED WITH: University Senate

Printed on: . Please go to http://policy.umn.edu for the most current version of the Policy or related document.

Reporting Security Incidents

Members of the University community are responsible for notifying their department or collegiate technical staff, helpdesk or supervisor if they suspect there has been a violation of University or departmental information security policy or if they suspect there may have been a security incident. See Appendix N: Examples of Reportable Security Incidents.

If a security incident is suspected, departmental and collegiate technical/security staff are responsible for notifying the Office of Information Technology Security (OITSEC) security personnel (e.g. by sending email to abuse@umn.edu). If a specific computer is involved, it must remain powered on, but disconnected from the network until OITSEC can review and assess next steps.

If local technical staff are not available, contact 1-HELP at 612-301-4357.

Reporting Violations of the Acceptable Use Policy

Acceptable use violations may involve any of the issues described in Appendix A: Using Information Technology Resources Standards of this policy.

Contact your departmental system/network administrator or technical support staff. In an emergency, during an in-progress attack, contact (612) 301-4357 (1-HELP). For after-the-fact or non-emergency reports, send logs and other pertinent information to abuse@umn.edu. Report account misuse (such as spamming by account-holders at the University) to abuse@umn.edu. Report misuse from outside the University to the originator's Internet Service Provider (usually abuse@xxx.xxx).
